Wastewater Constituents

Today we will discuss some problems about wastewater that has Industrial wastewater and domestic wastewater. This blog mainly presented the wastewater we generated in our daily life. We used water in our home, school or company and made it dirty. The wastewater flowed down form the toilet, shower, laundries, sink and etc. It is contained in food residue, toilet roll, stool and many more. It also includes rainwater that has flow cross the street during a storm. The water that washes off roads and roofs carrying harmful substances with it. It is mainly consisted of organic material (example food residue, stool), Synthetic detergent(eg. Dish soap, shampoo) suspended impurities.

How these may pose a challenge to the wastewater treatment process and the environment

In the 1950s to 1960s, wastewater pollution has become a social issue in Japan. The cause of water pollution is, on the one hand, the increase in sewage discharge caused by the construction of large factories and commercial facilities, on the other hand, the lag in the construction of sewer. Domestic wastewater without treatment can easily generate harmful viruses. They has paid a heavy price for this pollution. Wastewater will bring many diseases to them such as Bone pain, Minamata disease, and asthma. In 1991, the Japanese Environment Agency announced that there were 2,248 poisoned patients whom 1,004 died. Those pollution problem have caused great threats to environment and health.

The wastewater discharged by our will have a foul smell, if we stored it for a long time without treatment. This smell is really hard to breathe, and it will directly affect our mental state, irritability, decreased work efficiency, memory loss, etc. If we live in this environment for a long time, our sense of smell will be directly damaged.

The wastewater without treatment will directly affects the hardness of groundwater. These water is hard to drink, and it has a great impact on our health, and even affects industrial production. For example, These water with high hardness is easy to scale, which will affect the life of industrial equipment and even causes the explosions. At this time, they needs to be softened and purified. Other treatments will reduce the water hardness and reduce unnecessary incidents.

How we could solve some of these challenges

In the 1980s, Japan successfully developed a household purification tank that can be used to treat fecal sewage and domestic waste. This new type of the tank has been rapidly popularized in developed communities in the suburbs and rural areas that are not suitable for sewer construction. Nowadays many families have a sewage purification tank shown figure below. All of the domestic wasterwater have to be purified and treated before it discharges to the sewer. The government will have a inspection for repairing or installation every two months and give some allowance to those families. Those small details that are beneficial to the environment are worth learning for us. This product is not cheap about 800- 1500 dollars. If we want to popularize, we have to get the support form government.

Some garbage should not be led into drainage, especially oil and food residue. The cooking oil will make the pipe hard and block. We should use a strainer to filter out the fat in the food residue and throw them into the trash bin (figure2).

Clearwater and sanitation

One in nine people in the world cannot drinking clean water and over 2.5 million people do not have sanitation facilities. The new technologies of water and sanitation can decrease the number of deaths caused by waterborne or other diseases.

Figure3 aquatabs water purification tablets

There is a product named aquatabs water purification tablets which are used to rapidly sterilize quantities of drinking water. The tablets usually are putted into the water and wait 30 minutes. The water will be cleared, effective against all waterborne pathogens. Furthermore, this tablets is cheaper so that everyone can use
